This is a short essay about the diary of Anne Frank and how Anne improves her character.

Anne Frank was a German-Diarist who was a victim of the World War 2 Holocaust. She lived in hiding for 2–3 years with her family and the Van Daans. Anne was a bright thirteen year old who loved school and spending time with friends. Upon the family’s arrival at the annex Anne was optimistic and hopeful, but over time, her hopeful optimism disintegrated into loneliness, isolation, and deep thinking. Anne Frank develops throughout the play because she improves her character, brings out her “nicer” side, and she strives to see the good in the world.

Anne Frank improves her character throughout the play and learns from her mistakes. She always tries to understand everyone even though it’s hard for her. “I have a nicer side, Father . . . a sweeter, nicer side. But I’m scared to show it. I’m afraid that people are going to laugh at me if I’m serious”(Goodrich 1612). This proves that Anne tries to be nice but like any other teenager she has her troubles. At the beginning of the play Anne didn’t really think of how she impacted others but living in the annex made her think of her actions and the consequences of her actions. Not only does Anne start thinking of her actions but also her life as a whole. Anne tells Peter that she thinks of life more seriously now, and she wants to be a journalist when she goes up.

Anne is a kind person who works hard to bring out her nicer side. On Hanukkah, she gave a present to everybody. “It’s a muffler . . . to put round your neck . . . like an ascot, you know. I made it myself out of odds and ends . . . I knitted it in the dark each night, after I’d gone to bed. I’m afraid it looks better in the dark!”(Goodrich 1812). This piece of evidence shows that Anne is generous and thinks about everyone’s feelings. Even though some members of the Annex irritate her, she took the time to create a present for everyone in the Annex. Although Anne thinks of herself as a mean person, people really do appreciate her. At the beginning, would she really have taken the time to make a present for everyone? Maybe it was her boredom, but I think Anne was trying to switch out the mean and the nice Anne. Anne Frank is very festive and goes above and beyond to make the family come together on Hanukkah.

Anne strives to see the good in everyone and works hard to get along with her family members. Unlike her sister, Anne steps up for herself while still being congenial and gracious. She believes that everyone has good in their hearts. “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart”(Goodrich 1372). Anne cares deeply for others and is quick to forgive. She surpasses the other characters by accepting her situation, and continuing to see the world from a positive perspective. Otto Frank realizes this at the end of the play, when the words in his daughter’s diary exemplify how a young person in such a terrible situation can still see the good in the world. He says, “She puts me to shame” (Goodrich 1374).

As we can see, Anne truly is a hero. Anne proved to be a sweet person as she improved her character, brought out her “nicer” side, and continued to see the good in the world. She overcame many challenges and turned out to be an intelligent young woman. It is a shame that Anne couldn’t live her whole life. I believe that Anne would’ve accomplished her dreams and become someone famous like she said she would. She did become famous although it wasn’t for the reason she wanted.Through her ordeal of total isolation and the ever-present fear of discovery, we are able to see Anne turn from baby prankster into a confident and mature woman.
